Gulf State Pier Fishing question...

My family and I will be in Orange beach the first weekend in Sept. and I am hoping to do some fishing.
I have a new medium action 7' spinning Rod with a 4000 series shimano spinning reel that is begging
to catch some fish. Will this setup be too small to use on the pier and what species are biting good this
time of year. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
